THERE’S LOTS TO DO | In the Midlands, off the main tourist trail, you’ll find plenty to do… and with fewer crowds.

WALKING and CYCLING plenty of new forest walks around the Stables, over the new foot bridge on the River Inny and around nearby Centre Parcs. Bring bikes and explore the new Royal Canal Greenway (https://greenwaysireland.org/royal-canal-greenway/#Royal_Canal_Greenway_-_Longford) which passes nearby.

KAYAKING / PADDLE BOARDING Inventure.ie (Bob 086 8338450) is a dynamic adventure centre in Ballymahon which makes use of the 4km stretch of white water rapids (unique to the midlands) with pour-overs, stoppers, holes and standing waves on the River Inny. Join them for paddle boarding, kayaking or canoeing, all ages good to go.

GOLF | The internationally renowned 18-Hole Championship Glasson Golf Course, overlooks the stunning Lough Ree. Designed by golf pro and Ryder Cup Star Christy O’Connor Jnr, it’s only 15 minutes’ drive away in the picturesque village of Glasson.

FISHING | The super clean river Inny is right on our doorstep and is a great spot for coarse fishing. If you’d like to try it out, The Stables offers package Fishing breaks with accompanying gillie, boat and rods along with picnic hampers. Fish for more.

HORSE RIDING | The equestrian centre at Mosstown Stables in the nearby village of Keenagh houses state of the art all-weather facilities and an indoor arena, providing fun classes for all levels. You can also hire out horses during the hunt season.

ADVENTURE SPORTS | The Lilliput Adventure Centre (for kids big and small) is a 20 minute drive away, on the shore of Lough Ennell. You can hire boats here or take part in a variety of kid’s summer camps and courses – such as Canadian sailing, night hiking, gorge walking, abseiling, pier jumping, raft building, assault courses or bivouacking.

CULTURE & DINING:

MULLINGAR ARTS CENTRE | Opened in 1999 in the County Hall this 400-seater theatre space hosts touring dramas and gigs, two workshops for art and drama classes and an art gallery at Market House in Mullingar.

BELVEDERE HOUSE | Belvedere House, a beautiful 18th century Georgian hunting lodge designed by Richard Castle, on the shore of Lough Ennell, is only a 20 minutes drive away. Set among 160 acres of parkland, the grounds also contain woodland and shore walks and a walled garden containing many gorgeous rare and exotic species.

GLASSON LAKEHOUSE https://glassonlakehouse.ie/ a relatively new addition to the area, 20 minutes drive, in a very scenic setting with plenty of dining options, well worth a visit.

WINEPORT LODGE https://www.wineport.ie/The luxurious Wineport in Glasson village, with it’s gorgeous setting on the banks of Lough Ree, offers a genuine gastronomic experience only 15 minutes drive away.
